A well-rested, and sometimes much-needed, sleep is essential to wake up energized and alert. But can sleep also provide beauty benefits too?
The Benefits of Beauty Sleep
While some might think it’s just a catchy phrase, beauty sleep is a real thing, according to Web MD.
"Beauty sleep" is real. Your skin uses sleep hours to heal itself from the day's damage. When you drift off, your skin gets the chance to improve. That's why you may wake up looking fresh and rosy. - Source: Stephanie S. Gardner, MD: Web MD
More sleep = clearer skin. Lack of sleep can lead to stress, which causes pimples and blackheads, even in adults. In one study, experts found that college students had more breakouts when they were stressed out, such as during exam time during night-based cram sessions.
When we sleep, our stress hormone (cortisol) goes down and our sleep hormone (melatonin) goes up. Our body, and our skin, are in repair mode against the daytime damage.
