In order to get rid of blackheads, it's essential that you understand their structure and what causes them.

What are blackheads?

Blackheads the are a result of pores clogged with dirt, makeup, pollution and excess oils.  These residue mixtures react with oxygen in the air, and the contents turn black. Sometimes the residue can become infected - this leads to acne.

How can I get rid of blackheads?

Pores are an essential part of your skin structure, as they help keep your skin hydrated and moisturized but there are certain ingredients and actions you can turn to in order to get rid of blackheads and prevent them.

Salicylic acid

One of the best and most effective ways to clear out your pores is to use BHA based cleansers and toners, which are loaded with ingredients such as salicylic acid. Salicylic acid breaks down oils in the pore-clogging residue that has built. This prevents further build-up and the onset of more blackheads.  and therefore developing of the blackheads.

Because salicylic acid is a non-irritant, it's suitable for all skin types includes oily, acne-prone and sensitive. It's a great anti-inflammatory agent and can help with redness too.

Retinoids

Although retinoids are typically targeted to those seeking anti-aging properties, they also make great exfoliants. Retinoids accelerate the skin renewal process, reducing the formation of dead skin cells and wrinkles in turn. This prevents the pores getting plugged with extra dead skin cells.

Retinol is a superstar ingredient but those with sensitive skin should proceed with caution. Retinol also increases your skin's vulnerability to the sun, so be sure to double up on sun protection.

Exfoliating technology

We've seen a recent boost in technology within the skin care world.

Facial devices are a great addition to your blackhead reducing regimen. Brands including Foreo and Clarisonic pulsate and vibrate on your skin, aiding in the process of breaking down pore residue. Remember to thoroughly wash and replace brush heads after the recommended time of use.

Masking

Masks packed with ingredients such as clay and natural fruit extracts like papaya are great for extracting excess oils from your pores.

Things to bear in mind about blackheads

  • Having blackheads does not equate to having dirty skin -  anyone can get them at any stage of their life. Be careful to not over strip your skin of oils as this will lead to sensitivity and dry skin. Your skin needs these oils to maintain its healthy healthy so don't skip out on the moisturizer.
  • Look out for products that may be breaking you out. Reduce the use of comedogenic formulas, such as those containing mineral oils or pore-blocking pigments.
  • If you're not already, get into a regular cleansing routine. This is one of the most important steps in preventing blackheads as it not only helps your skin to remove dirt and oils, but also stimulates the natural skin clearing process.
