The first step to perfecting your skincare routine is to ask yourself: What type of skindo I have? There are seven types of skin type, and each one needs special catering to in terms of product use, washing habits, and more.

So how do you know what skin typeyou have? The easiest method is simply by observing your bare face throughout the day. Gently wash your face with a cleanser, pat dry, and observe your skin after half an hour. You can also go longer and study your face at regular intervals from morning to evening to see how your skin appears on a typical day. And if you want to break out some tools, try pressing a clean blotting sheet to your face and noting how much oil was absorbed to see where you fall on the spectrum from dryness to oiliness.

Here are the seven skin types and recommendations on how to pamper each one:

1. Normal skin

If your skin is generally calm and has few breakouts, you'll be glad to know that your skin type is normal and as low maintenance as skin types go. Just stick to a gentle cleanser, daily moisturizer, and use a broad-spectrum sunscreen to keep your skin balanced. Since your skin isn't prone to reacting negatively to new products, you can also feel free to play around a little and try different products if you like.

2. Oily

If your face frequently feels oily and appears shiny, your skin type is oily. This is the result of the skin barrier producing too much sebum, or oil, so be careful not to accidentally increase oil production by over-washing or using a wash that's too harsh. Look for non-comedogenic products and oil-free moisturizers, and stay clear of anything containing mineral oil, alcohol, or petrolatum.

3. Dry/dehydrated

If your skin feels flaky or tight, it may be dry or dehydrated. Dry skin can be improved by using a rich moisturizer multiple times a day and avoiding harsh soaps. Dehydration can be corrected by using water-based products and drinking plenty of water every day.

4. Combination

Does your skin type kind of feel all over the place? Is your T-zone prone to oiliness, while other parts of your face stay dry and matte? It's likely that you've got combination skin, and your best plan of attack is to identify and target your problem areas. Balance is key, so go for spot treatments, toners, and balancing creams.

5. Acne-prone

If you're suffering from one breakout after another, your skin is acne-prone and needs lots of care. Acne-prone skin is marked by pores that clog easily, and it can also be oily or dry at the same time. To treat acne, use cleansers especially targeting acne, with clarifying ingredients like clay, salicylic acid, and retinol.

6. Sensitive

If your skin is prone to flushing, rashes, discomfort, and other signs of irritation, your skin type is sensitive and you'll want to tread carefully. Soothe your skin with calmative or anti-inflammatory formulas that work to fortify the skin barrier. Avoid potential irritants like alcohol, fragrances, and antibacterial ingredients.

7. Mature

If your skin is showing visible signs of aging like fine lines, wrinkles, sagging, dryness, or dark spots, your skin is mature and will benefit from rejuvenating care. Treat it to restorative treatments that promote collagen production and fight against damage from free radicals. Invest in a good serum, start using retinoids, and try applying richer face creams.
