As part of our Healthy Hair event, today I'm going to be sharing with you my own curly hair care routine. With tight curly, ringlet hair which reaches down my back almost to my elbows, I am often asked how I style my hair, how often I wash it and what products I swear by.
Truth be told, hair care is a really personal thing and each person's hair texture is different, so it's taken a lot of trying and testing to discover the products that work for me. But, if it works for me, it might work for you too, and this seems like the perfect time to spill all my hair care routine secrets. Here we go...
1.Wash hair every couple of daysI don't wash my hair everyday - it's a big task when you have shoulder length curly hair - and instead I opt to do it every couple of days, varying from twice a week to three times a week depending on how frizzy my hair gets. In fact, having such thick hair it doesn't go greasy, it's really the frizz and loss of curl I worry about. At the moment I am using the Matrix Biolage R.A.W. (Real, Authentic, Wholesome) Recover Shampoo. I love this shampoo as it's made with ingredients that are 70% natural origin and, most importantly for eliminating frizz in curly hair, it is produced without sulfates, silicones, parabens or artificial colorants.
2.Use a complimentary conditionerI would never wash my hair without using a matching conditioner to my shampoo as it's important to ensure the ingredients in your conditioner compliment those in your shampoo to ensure they're as effective as possible. So, naturally I am using the Matrix Biolage R.A.W. Recover Conditioner at the moment. This conditioner is formulated especially for sensitive hair and is made with coriander oil and kaolin clay to improve strength and shine to hair. Plus, it looks just like a smoothie which I think is super cute!
3.Use a curl cream on wet hairTo help tame my curls after my hair wash, I like to use the MIZANI Rose H20 Crème Hairdress, which I apply after getting out the shower onto wet hair. MIZANI is especially targetted for dry, rebellious and coarse hair helps to prevent split ends and styling damage, promoting shine and health. And hey, I can't say my hair is totally tamed, but it certainly tones down the frizz!
4.Apply hair oil to ends of hairSomething I do on a daily basis is apply a hair oil to the ends of my hair. My favorite is Kérastase's Elixir Ultime Hair Oil which is a truly indulgent treatment for your hair! In the morning when I'm taming my hair ready for a day at the office, I simply take two pumps of the Elixir and run this through the ends of my hair with my fingers to eliminate frizz and re-awaken my curls. My top tip is to never use this on your roots, only from the middle of your hair downwards for the ultimate shine.
5.Finish with some texture sprayI like to finish off my hair care regimen with a texture spray, to ensure my curls look natural and bouncy and stay in place all day. My spray of choice is the Redken Fashion Waves 07 Sea Salt Spray, which adds instant texture to locks as well as half adding as a hair spray by giving medium control to my locks. It's the perfect way to finish off my curly hair routine.
